FOR SALE: Maserati 3500 GT/GTI, early Sebring and early Mistral gearbox, ZF S5-17 (5-speed), very good condition, video of rotating internals present
Specifications:
The gearbox is complete with shifter and rear flange. The reverse light switch is not included.
Optional is the Maserati clutch (bell) housing on the pictures with the axle, levers and bearing for the clutch.
The number of the gearbox is 1657, which is stamped on top of the rear part and on the lower side of the main housing part.
It was overhauled a few years ago with new syncro rings (check the yellow marked bolts of the gearbox) and it was running and shifting very good in a Maserati 3500 GT until last year (2022).
Please check this video where you can see and hear it rotating while the lower cover is off, everything looks and sounds perfect:
It really worked good in his 3500 GT, but the previous owner wanted 100% perfection and decided to change it for an even better one in as-new condition.
In his opinion, this box was a bit noisy, however according to specialists this is really normal for this type of gearbox. When I took the lower cover off, the box showed very clean without any signs of wear.
I would suggest to check the correct pressure on the bearings of the lay shaft (adjustable over shims) and then put it back together with new gaskets, oil seals and oil. The syncro rings are fine, the shifting goes very easy without any noises.
Shipping is possible when arranged or pre-paid by the buyer, I will help with packing/crating the gearbox. I do know a good and not too expensive shipping company, which I can advise.
For collection, the gearbox is in Kerkrade. That's 3 km from Herzogenrath and 10 km von Aachen in Germany.
For your information: these gearboxes are very identical with the ZF S4-17 gearboxes in BMW 507 and 503 and are quite often used in these cars with only minor changes to the box.
